Spinal Injections for Pain Relief
Spinal injections are a valuable tool in the management of back and neck pain. Most spinal injections are performed as part of a comprehensive treatment program. When combined with a supervised exercise and physical therapy program, injections can greatly reduce the pain associated with spinal conditions and improve a patient's quality of life.
When Are Spinal Injections Used?
Spinal injections may be used to:
- Relieve acute or chronic spinal pain
- Reduce inflammation around compressed nerve roots
- Provide pain relief that allows a patient to participate in physical therapy
- Help diagnose the source of pain (diagnostic injection)
- Delay or potentially avoid the need for surgery
Epidural Steroid Injections
Epidural steroid injections deliver corticosteroid medication directly into the epidural space of the spine — the area surrounding the spinal cord and nerve roots. This provides targeted anti-inflammatory relief close to the source of pain. They are particularly effective for pain caused by nerve compression from a herniated disc or spinal stenosis.
Facet Joint Injections
Facet joint injections are administered directly into the small joints on the back of the spine that connect vertebrae. These joints can become painful due to arthritis or injury. The injection provides both pain relief and diagnostic information about whether the facet joints are the source of a patient's pain.
What to Expect
Spinal injections are typically performed on an outpatient basis using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to ensure precise needle placement. The procedure itself is brief, and patients usually return home the same day. Dr. Ferachi will discuss what to expect before, during, and after the injection and will develop a follow-up plan based on your response to treatment.
